Arthur Conan Doyle and Victorian Spiritualism

I know that a few of you in ENGL 494 are very interested in Victorian spiritualism, so I present this youtube clip to you all — it’s footage of an interview in 1930 with Arthur Conan Doyle. We’ll be reading Doyle’s The Sign of Four in a few weeks. I’m curious, though, if any of you know that Doyle was a die-hard spiritualism enthusiast. We’ve talked about spiritualism a little bit so far this semester, especially in our class last week on Eliot’s The Lifted Veil. This clip should give you a sense of how entrenched spiritualism was in the Victorian imagination.

Enjoy!
