As we prepare for the final few weeks of classes, please take some time to view these early films by the Lumiere Brothers, who are often considered the fathers of the cinema. As you watch these, you will probably find yourself thinking that they are either incredibly boring or strangely bizarre and unsettling (or somewhere in between). Today, we are so accustomed to narrative cinema (movies with a story) that we’re not always comfortable watching such short cinematic bursts of reality. As yourself, what is it exactly about these films that seems so strange and bizarre?
